Maximizing the window of opportunity

A lucky afternoon.  Earlier this week I had the opportunity to get out for a short outing.  It proved to be very fruitful.  I had beautiful light and interesting views and sightings.

 Farmland and sky.

Another adult Red Tail that let me take a few pics before taking off.  I may have figured out how best to approach them in a car.  It only took 3 years.  I guess I'm a slow learner.

Being Prepared

The boy scout motto is be prepared.  Today, I was a lucky old boy scout.  As I was driving to take a short walk I came across this redtail hunting on the side of the road.  The vast majority of the time, an  adult redtail will not hang around when the car stops moving, but today was different.  Lucky for me, I was prepared and had my camera with me.

After dropping to the ground in search of a meal.  The hawk came up empty handed and then flew off.

 Focused on the hunt.

Some interesting foliage remnants.

This picture makes me think of the beautiful art my friend Rick Harrington makes.

The last few weekends I've gotten out in search of raptors.  Here are two of my favorites.  It's funny how photography is so much like fishing, always hoping for the great encounter.

Either a Sharp Shinned Hawk or a Coopers, it's difficult to tell as they are identical in markings but the size difference is the indicator and they can overlap in size.   These high stung hunter mostly feed on small birds and rodents.

A Winters Walk in B+W

Got out for a brief walk this past weekend.  It's funny what draws one's attention sometime.
